Neuropsychological Evaluations

Neuropsychological testing involves sampling a range of cognitive skills through the administration of standardized psychological tests. Cognitive domains such as attention, memory, and components of problem solving are often assessed. In addition, academic skills such as reading comprehension, spelling, and basic mathematics can be evaluated. Finally, elements of mood and psychological adjustment are frequently evaluated.

A neuropsychological evaluation helps to determine an individual’s pattern of cognitive strengths and weakness. This information can be used to better understand thinking problems someone may be having in their daily life. The test results can be helpful for educational or vocational planning, or to more generally guide medical or rehabilitation treatments.

A neuropsychological evaluation also can assist in the diagnosis of some conditions that might underlie suspected cognitive impairment.

When is Neuropsychological Testing Appropriate?

  • There are complaints or evidence of cognitive impairment impacting daily function, progress through rehabilitation, or educational/vocational success.
  • There is evidence from history of past cognitive problems in academic or work function that might impact future vocational rehabilitation goals or processes.
  • There is a medical or psychological condition that could influence cognitive function.

How is the Evaluation Conducted?

The evaluation usually involves a review of relevant records, an interview by a neuropsychologist, and several hours of cognitive testing administered by a technician. The cost varies based on the scope of the evaluation and the pace with which the client moves through the evaluation.

In general, the neuropsychological evaluation at RIW is designed for individuals who are fluent in English. It may be possible, with the aide of an interpreter, to perform a partial assessment of cognitive skills in individuals who are not fluent in English. It is preferable, when possible, to identify a neuropsychologist in the community who could assess non English speaking clients in their own language.

How Long Does the Evaluation Take?

A common evaluation for a general assessment of cognitive and academic skills requires an hour of time from the neuropsychologist and three to four hours of testing from the technician. Longer evaluations may be needed to address other questions, such as the diagnosis of an underlying medical condition.
